Hillary to give Keynote?

Thu Jul 31, 2008 at 10:21:37 AM PDT

I came across this link yesterday, not quite sure what to make of it:

A top Obama aide told party leaders in a conference call last night that Clinton has accepted the offer to be the featured prime-time Tuesday night speaker, a high-profile slot that some of Clinton's own people have floated in recent days.

Aug. 26 is the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in 1920.

Launch of the Georgetown Progressive

Mon Nov 05, 2007 at 09:32:20 AM PDT

Today, November 5th, 2007, is the launch of The Georgetown Progressive.  The Progressive is a new web-based publication written by students at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.  The Georgetown Progressive will be a publication providing commentary and analysis on national and campus issues alike, and will be available completely free at www.georgetownprogressive.com

Recently, the GU College Democrats have launched a campus-wide initiative called the Progressive Coalition.  The project aims to unite independent, progressive groups on campus with the common goal of engaging more students in democratic (and Democratic) activism.  The initiative is run by the College Democrats, but look below the fold to learn about the other organizations involved and what you can do to help...

Putting "Leslie" Blitzer to Rest.

Sun Feb 18, 2007 at 01:08:22 PM PDT

Sorry, guys, I don't like Wolfie any better than the rest of you, but the simple fact is this: his name is Wolf.  The "Leslie" story is false, and we do a disservice to this site's reputation every time we repeat this falsehood.  I know this is sort of a nit-picking thing, but we should all have respect for the truth.  Additionally, many people have been angry about slander based on real names (See: Obama, Barack Hussein)

Maybe some of you already knew this.  Maybe most of you did.  Regardless, the results of my little investigation are below the fold...

Off to work for Ned Lamont...

Wed Jun 28, 2006 at 03:18:29 PM PDT

Yesterday, I arrived at the Ned Lamont HQ for Connecticut's Third Congressional District in New Haven.  After a brief interview going over my previous campaign experience, I was offered a post as a member of the field staff.  I cannot tell you how excited I am to be joining up with the campaign!  For as long as I have been able, I have been volunteering for Democratic campaigns.  To do so as a job is fantastic.  After we win in August, I'll eventually be heading back down to school in D.C., but hopefully also to warm up the Senate seat for Mr. Lamont.

Unfortunately, though, I must leave behind another worthy cause...

The CT Democratic Convention, Day 2

Sat May 20, 2006 at 05:45:10 PM PDT

Many will probably say that the Connecticut gubernatorial race is unimportant.  Well, I say that's crap.  What follows below the fold is a story of old-fashioned, arm-twisting, convention-oriented Democratic politics that evokes the days of FDR and may just help us pick up some more seats in November...

Fighting the Distortions - with dKos to help me

Mon May 01, 2006 at 12:28:18 AM PDT

Okay, so I was reading some stuff about Colbert's wonderful performance, and I accidentally wandered into a website called "NewsBusters.org," which prides itself on "Exposing and Combating Liberal Media Bias."

Wonderful.

Not surprisingly, I needed to look no further than the first page of comments on Colbert to find a terrible misrepresentation of facts - by their own side! (cue mock gasps now).

Anyway...

The Newest Victims of Global Warming (or, As Go the Frogs, so Goes the World)

Wed Jan 11, 2006 at 12:27:59 PM PDT

Climate change is an important issue.  Unfortunately, it is also an easy topic to forget about.  There is urgency about the Alito hearings, instant shock and outrage at the wire-tapping scandals, and disgust at the Abramoff money web.  Global warming, on the other hand, is often slow.  It deals with gradual, often-subtle changes in the environment that can often take place in a geologic timeframe.  Besides, during the winter, what New Englander would mind a few more degrees here and there? It is, then, an easy crisis to postpone.

However, while it may take 50 or 100 years until we see drastic, hollywood-esque icebergs sliding into the ocean, and while it may be some time before Rhode Island realizes "Crap, we all live at sea level!", there are more immediate consequences.

Yes, the gradual change means that even if we don't see dramatic, human-life-threatening change today, the environment is undeniably shifting, and that has consquences - right now.

Climate change is a global phenomenon, and is causing changes in ecosystems around the world

BBC Gives Blogs Credit for WP Story

Wed Nov 16, 2005 at 11:24:43 AM PDT

From the BBC:
The Pentagon's admission - despite earlier denials - that US troops used white phosphorus as a weapon in Falluja last year is more than a public relations issue - it has opened up a debate about the use of this weapon in modern warfare.

The admission contradicted a statement this week from the new and clearly under-briefed US ambassador in London Robert Holmes Tuttle that US forces "do not use napalm or white phosphorus as weapons".

The official line to that point had been that WP, or Willie Pete to use its old name from Vietnam, was used only to illuminate the battlefield and to provide smoke for camouflage.

But the best part is the next line...

Kalling All Kossacks - I Need Your Help to "Nail" Michelle Malkin!

Sun Nov 13, 2005 at 01:16:15 PM PDT

Hey Everybody,

I am currently a freshman at Georgetown University, and I have been doing my best to take advantage of every opportunity I can while here.  I waited out in the rain to attend John Kerry's speech.  I went to Byron York's "Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy" lecture.  I went to Cindy Sheehan's rally downtown.  etc.  Well, now the Georgetown University Lecture Fund is having Michelle Malkin come to speak.  Topic: "UNHINGED: LIBERALS GONE WILD"

Here is my request to all of you:

What questions should we ask her?  I can possibly get plenty of people to go to this event, what outrageous statements should she be asked to explain to a room full of students?

Chalabi to be Iraqi PM?

Mon Oct 24, 2005 at 01:50:46 PM PDT

If you believe TIME's Joe Klein (I know, I know), things might be going in that direction:
He [Chalabi] currently serves as Deputy Prime Minister in Ibrahim al-Jaafari's government. And now -- trumpet clarion here -- he is coming back to Washington in November at the invitation of Treasury Secretary John Snow.

But Chalabi will have potentially more significant meetings with National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley and perhaps Condoleezza Rice, both of whom -- according to high-ranking Administration officials -- believe that he is a plausible and acceptable candidate to be the next Prime Minister of Iraq when that nation votes, yet again, for a new government on Dec. 15.

It is the latest signpost in the Bush Administration's hegira from lunatic idealism to utter desperation in Iraq, and it comes at a crucial moment. Iraq's fate -- well, the U.S.'s fate in Iraq -- will be decided in the next six months.

Emphasis mine.

The Worst Email I've Ever Received...and my response

Thu Oct 20, 2005 at 10:36:07 AM PDT

I have a very interesting relationship with my grandfather.  We disagree on a lot, politically speaking.  He is very conservative, but we have a great time baiting each other.  In fact, we get along really well, usually based on a mutual interest in World War II history. However, he also loves sending me conservative emails to drive me crazy.  He's a nice guy like that.  Well, he found a pretty good one the other day, and that is what is now reprinted here in full, along with my reply...Trust me, it's worth seeing this.

Wed Oct 19, 2005 at 08:55:13 AM PDT

For those of you who aren't signed up at DFA (shame on you!), this email just made the rounds.

Paul Hackett and DFA have put forward a pledge for grassroots activists to sign and pass along:

I pledge to only support candidates who:
  1. Acknowledge that the U.S. was misled into the war in Iraq
  2. Advocate for a responsible exit plan with a timeline
  3. Support our troops at home and abroad

See below for the full text of the email:
or, y'know, just go sign it now!

Byron York on DailyKos, Miers, DeLay, and More

Mon Oct 17, 2005 at 05:57:28 PM PDT

I just got back from Byron York's (of the National Review) lecture at Georgetown University. It was an event sponsored by the Lecture Fund and College Republicans, but unlike a Bush event, I never had to sign my soul away to get in. During the lecture and the Q+A that followed, he touched on many topics, including the 2006 elections and DailyKos!

Why We Need To Talk About Campaign Finance Reform BEFORE 2008

Thu Oct 13, 2005 at 12:30:39 PM PDT

Campaign Finance Reform and 2008

Imagine this: It is 2008. Following in the tradition of 2004, both parties stack their primaries to have a nominee as early as possible. By early March, Hillary and McCain have been nominated by their parties. McCain has endured a tough campaign in which he had to repeatedly overcome attacks by the extreme right-wing backers of (insert right-winger candidate here). Hillary, capitalizing on name recognition and Clinton nostalgia, had a pretty easy time securing the nomination. Let the campaign begin! As two senators who have been getting along lately, this campaign should be a civil one, and the American public looks forward to good, honest debate. Right? Not necessarily. Join me below the fold to see why this scenario puts McCain in a terrible dilemma and could create the dirtiest race in American history...

A question about Iraq...

Thu Sep 22, 2005 at 04:19:04 PM PDT

Let me say this first: I am a liberal.  I vehemently opposed the war in Iraq and drove to NYC with my friend and his mother to participate in the massive protests before the invasion.  I was in DC on a field trip the week the invasion began, and I debated it with anyone who would stop to talk to me.

Now I, too, want our troops home.

It was not fair to send them there in the first place.  I am mad that this even needs to be discussed, because this is a dilemma we should never have had to deal with.  Nevertheless, here is my question:

How do we justify calling for a full withdrawal when it seems to ensure that Iraq will become a failed/terrorist/disaster of a state that is much more dangerous now than it ever was under Saddam?
